Dark Hollow
Falls - Rose River Trail Loop
Summer 1996 I took this trip with my nephew
Charles and his friend Justin. This was the second time they had been hiking
in the park with me. This trail is only 6 miles long with an elevation
change of 1400 ft. The hike is most enjoyable when started from the Dark
Hollow Falls entrance. You follow water along almost the entire trail which
is especially good when hiking in those hot/sticky summer months Shenandoah
is famous for. In addition to the two water falls along the trail you pass
an old abandoned copper mine. Camping is great at the bottom most portion of
the loop. Wildlife spottings have always been numerous on this circuit for
me, as you can see below from a trip taken the year before.


This guy was a little too comfortable around people to
suit me. Probably due to being fed by stupid people. The only harm done was
a punctured canteen, fortunately.
